Fannie Mae Foundation Releases 2004 Report

Did you know that in the year 2000 three out of every 10 single-family home sales in the DC Metro area exceeded $250,000? And by 2003, that figure jumped to six in 10. Between the years 2000 and 2003 the number of homes priced above $400,000 more than doubled. Also during this period, the share of homes reasonably priced for lower-income families dropped dramatically.

You can get this and other statistical facts from the Fannie Mae Foundation’s Housing in the Nation’s Capital 2004 report. Researched by the Urban Institute, this publication, like the 2002 report, proves useful beyond the narrow confines of the affordable housing community.

The Foundation launched the2004 report, Friday, January 7 at the National Association of Home Builders Board Room/ Auditorium in Northwest DC. The Urban Institute’s Margery Turner presented finding to an audience of nearly 100 nonprofits, for-profits and government agency representatives. CNHED Executive Director Bob Pohlman moderated the panel discussion and Q & A sessions. The panelists for the event included; David Robertson, Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments; Gerald Joseph, Community Preservation and Development Corporation, Barbara B. Lang, DC Chamber of Commerce; and John D. Lesinski, Greater Washington Board of Trade, Housing Task Force.

Looking to Make a Difference in 2005?

Well look no further. The Campaign for Mandatory Inclusionary Zoning is looking for participants to support them as they gather on Wednesday, Jan. 12 at 10 a.m. to urge Mayor Anthony Williams to support affordable housing through Mandatory Inclusionary Zoning.

The group will meet at the Wilson Building and proceed to the Mayor's office to deliver thousands of signed postcards from DC residents-all of who want the mayor's support for Mandatory Inclusionary Zoning.  The campaign needs your help to ensure that the message is loud and clear and a newsworthy event.  Plan to participate? CNHED + Open House = Success

More than 60 people turned out Thursday, Dec. 16 to celebrate the opening of the Coalition's new offices on U Street. Open House goers enjoyed tastings from U Street eateries like Julia's Empanadas and Maggie Moo's. This event served as both an open house and annual meeting for CNHED. Besides good food, there was also an election of Coalition Directors. There was also a special presentation led by the Enterprise Foundation's Deborah Stevenson to present the 2005 Madeline C. McCullough Scholarship to two Howard University students, Nicole Aiken and Timothy Butler. Butler, who was in Mississippi for the holidays, was in attendance via speaker phone. Both scholarship recipients gave remarks detailing their gratitude for the awards. The open house gradually came to a close as people slowly drifted through the offices checking out the exposed brick and eccentric lighting fixtures. But as the last empananda was eaten, all of the open house visitiors were gone. The Coalition, however, would like to thank all of those who came out to the CNHED Open House/Annual meeting, and looks forward to working with all of its member and friends in the new year!

Welcome Aboard!

Four new Coalition Board Members were elected at last month's open house. They include: George Escobar, Latino Economic Development Corporation; Katie Groen, Community Preservation & Development Corporation; Tom Howarth, Jubilee Housing, Inc. and Tania Jackson, Jair Lynch Companies. Officers of the Board were elected at a CNHED Board meeting held Monday, Jan. 10.  Michael Wallach, Anacostia Economic Development was elected president.
