JimGrahamAward(Sized).Neither brisk temperatures nor rainy skies could keep the Coalition for Nonprofit Housing and Economic Development (CNHED) from packing the Gala Theater at Tivoli Square and presenting its first ever theatrical production "A Place to Call Home... Stories From Along the Housing Continuum" last Tuesday, December 8, 2009. CNHED members and supporters, District of Columbia Councilmembers, local government officials and residents were among those who turned out for the annual fundraiser and special Lenny & Emilyevent highlighting the need for a continuum of affordable housing in Washington, DC.

The event kicked off with an hour-long cocktail reception after which attendees filled the sold-out theatre to hear the life stories of three amazing Sonyaindividuals who have been impacted by CNHED member organizations, Some, Inc., Mi Casa, Inc. and DC Habitat for Humanity. Although the stories varied from resident to resident, each had a common thread: a need for a continuum of affordable housing in Washington, DC. Directed by Holly Bass, the production featured three award-winning poets, Twain Dooley, Gayle Danley and Sonya Renee who commanded the attention of the audience as they shared the hopes, dreams, struggles and triumphs of each resident. Using only their voice, some notes, music stands and stools, the poets took the audience on an emotional journey through the lives of Lenny Ferguson, Carlos Arevalo and Urica Lewis.

Heather-Flowers(250)2The highlight of the night came when the honorees took the stage and shared how their lives have been changed by the support and services provided by CNHED members.  District of Columbia Councilmembers Jim Graham, Harry Thomas and Yvette Alexander, representing each resident's ward, presented plaques on behalf of CNHED recognizing each resident for their achievements. CNHED is extremely proud to have produced an event not only to highlight the great work of our member organizations and the residents that are impacted, but also to recharge the affordable housing industry and remind them of why our work is so important.
